Bi-syndrome as a dynamic system

Bi-syndrome. You recognize the word. You know what it means: painful obstruction, external pathogens, stagnation of Qi and blood. Even if you have been working with Chinese herbs for years and regularly encounter Bi-syndromes in your practice, there often remains a moment of doubt: which of those classical formulas fits here exactly — and why not the others?

It helps then if you understand that Bi-syndromes are not a category, but a movement. A pathogen that penetrates ever deeper into the body through the outer layers, via the Jing Luo and the secondary meridians, until it reaches the organs. That process is not linear, not static, and cannot be neatly compartmentalized. It is a dynamic system — and only when you understand that system will you also understand the formulas. For formulas are not recipes that you look up; they are answers to a question that you must first be able to formulate precisely.

In this two-day refresher course, Yan Schroën teaches you how to ask that question. You will learn the complete differential diagnosis of Bi syndromes — from acute to deeply chronic, from mixed forms to tissue-specific images. You will analyze more than 25 classic formulas side by side, and you will understand what distinguishes formulas within the same subtype. And you will learn how to translate that knowledge to the individual on your treatment couch.

Key topics of the course

The course is structured around differential diagnosis as a framework — as an instrument to understand how patterns develop and transition into one another. Yan starts at the basics: what exactly Bi means, how an external pathogen enters the body, and the path it takes from the skin and tendons to the joints and ultimately to the organs. This pathogenesis is the key to understanding both the diagnosis and the direction of recovery.

From this foundation, all subtypes are elaborated: acute and chronic forms, mixed presentations, and Bi syndromes in various tissues. More than 25 classic formulas are covered, always placed side by side with one central question: what makes the difference? Which specific herbs determine the nuance between formulas that appear similar at first glance? This analytical understanding of formulas is what distinguishes this course from all courses that merely spoon-feed standard formulas.

The final part is dedicated to personalization. You will learn how to further refine a classic formula by adding or omitting herbs, so that the treatment truly aligns with the individual patient — a reasoning you can apply time and again.

Benefits for you as a participant

After these two days, you will have a complete and coherent picture of Bi syndromes. You understand the pathogenesis in depth, you can distinguish subtypes, and you know how chronic conditions relate to the organ layer. That insight changes how you diagnose, how you assess the direction of recovery, and how you tailor your treatment accordingly.

Moreover, you learn classic formulas in a way that sticks: understood from their internal logic. You will soon be able to explain why you choose this formula for this patient — and you will have the tools to apply that same reasoning to cases you have never seen before.

That is knowledge you will take with you for the rest of your career.
