Continuing education

Every practitioner encounters the “therapeutic plateau.” You have diagnosed the pattern correctly, your point selection is accurate, and you fully trust your treatment plan, yet the patient’s chronic pain persists. In those cases, mostly the culprit is not energetic disbalance, but a physical obstruction: dense scar tissue, fascial adhesions, or a “muscle energy crisis“ in contractile tissue that standard filiform needles simply cannot resolve.

For the first time in the Netherlands, Brian Bowen presents the Dāo Needle Therapy Certification Course, a distinct system for these “stubborn” musculoskeletal cases. This intensive 3-day course bridges the gap between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern biomechanics, giving you a definitive tool to treat the physical structures that refuse to heal.

What makes Dão Needle Therapy unique?

Unlike standard acupuncture or dry needling, this technique utilizes a specialized instrument: the Dão Needle (Knife Needle). This needle will be available in the Netherlands soon. It is a refined tool with a specialized flat tip designed to gently separate and release adhesions without the trauma of surgery.

Our Norwegian partner Akupunkturutstyr AS will provide the needles free of charge during the course.

Where other modalities focus on signaling the body to heal, Dão Needle Therapy focuses on removing the physical barrier to that healing—whether that is inert scar tissue or a locked, dysfunctional muscle. The function will be restored; the pain is stopped.

How this differs from other methods

Vs. Dry Needling: Dry needling typically uses standard filiform needles to elicit a twitch response in trigger points. Dão Needle Therapy uses a specialized, non-filiform tool to physically release scar tissue and restore function to contractile tissue that standard needles are too flexible to affect.

Vs. Distal Needling: Distal needling relies heavily on powerful distal imaging and channel correspondence. Dão Needle Therapy on the other hand is a local, structural intervention. It works directly on the Ashi points, treating the “hardware” problem (tissue structure) so that your “software” treatments (distal points/meridians) can finally work.

Vs. Neuro Meridian Acupuncture: Both systems are highly effective but target different layers. Where Neuro Meridian Acupuncture excels at precise nerve entrapment and neuromodulation, Dāo Needle Therapy focuses specifically on the fascial, mechanical, and contractile layers. It addresses the inert tissue and muscle disfuntion that often compresses those nerves, offering a structural solution that perfectly complements a neurological approach.

Course Content

This comprehensive 3-day certification combines the complete Foundations curriculum (Day 1 & 2) with the advanced Master Class modules (Day 3). You will progress from core safety and palpation skills directly into advanced protocols for sports injuries, complex pain, and scar tissue. This course empowers you to leave simple “pain chasing” behind and use Ashi points as precise diagnostic meters.

You will learn to:

Master the Groundbreaking Technique: Acquire expertise in the specialized Dāo needle and its unique handling methods (such as Tap Step and Probe needling). You will learn to safely break down scar tissue and adhesions that standard needles cannot reach.
Restore Contractile Tissue Function: Learn how to break the “muscle energy crisis” in locked tissue, restoring normal contraction and range of motion.
Deepen Ashi Point Anatomy: Go beyond simple pain triggers. You will learn to map and grade Ashi points, using them as precise diagnostic guides and therapeutic meters to assess the mechanical threshold of tissue.
Differentiate Dysfunction from Compensation: Stop chasing symptoms. You will master the differentiation techniques necessary to distinguish primary Dysfunction (the root cause) from Compensation (the secondary pattern). Treating a compensation often makes the problem worse; knowing the difference is key.
Integrate Biomechanics & Fascia: The course bridges the gap between Eastern and Western paradigms by teaching you postural analysis, fascial mapping, and biomechanical tests. You will also learn how patient positioning and corrective exercises are essential for lasting results.
Understand Pain Mechanisms: You will gain a thorough understanding of how pain relates to Qi and Blood stagnation and how this specific needling influences and transforms that process.

Primary Patient Groups for Dão Needle Therapy

Patients with “Stubborn” Chronic Pain Individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions that have persisted despite standard treatments. This therapy is specifically designed to address cases where traditional acupuncture or dry needling has hit a “therapeutic plateau”.
Patients with Muscle Dysfunction: Cases where contractile tissue is locked in an “energy crisis” and requires physical restoration.
Patients with Significant Scar Tissue & Adhesions Patients with post-surgical scars or internal adhesions from old injuries. The specialized “knife needle” is uniquely capable of physically breaking up these fibrotic tissues to restore flow, something standard filiform needles cannot effectively do.
Athletes and Sports Injury Cases Individuals with conditions such as tendonitis, repetitive strain injuries, or specific musculoskeletal dysfunctions common in sports. The therapy’s focus on biomechanics and soft tissue restrictions makes it highly effective for restoring range of motion and function.
Patients with Postural Imbalances Those whose pain is driven by structural misalignment. Because the therapy integrates postural analysis and biomechanical testing, it benefits patients who need their physical “architecture” corrected rather than just symptom management.
Complex Musculoskeletal Cases Patients presenting with confusing pain patterns where the root cause is unclear. The system teaches you to differentiate between primary dysfunction (the actual problem) and compensation patterns (secondary symptoms), ensuring you treat the right target.
Patients with Nerve Entrapment due to Fascial Restriction While similar to neuro-meridian acupuncture, this approach specifically benefits patients where the nerve entrapment is caused by inert tissue or fascial densification that needs to be physically released to relieve pressure on the nervous system.
